Grease build-up inside a main sewer-pipe
As home repair emergencies go, nothing is quite so annoying as a clogged drain. In some cases, you can unclog drains yourself; in other cases, you?ll need the help of a plumber.
a
Here are four tips to help you with clogs:
Tip #1: Prevent Clogs
The most effective way to deal with clogged drains is to prevent them from happening in the first place. Install drain covers in sinks and showers and kee
p accumulations from building up by keeping drains clear of hair and other matter that can cause clogs. You can use a chemical drain cleaner periodically to help dissolve anything that might have accumulated in the pipes.
Tip #2: Check the Stopper
In drains equipped with pop-up stoppers, the problem is sometimes caused by buildup surrounding the stopper. Take it off and clean it. This might solve the problem.
Tip #3: Try a Chemical Drain Cleaner
Buy a high-quality chemical drain cleaner and follow the safety instructions on the side of the bottle. Be sure to ventilate the area and keep kids and pets away. Be patient and give the cleaner time to work; sometimes clogs dissolve very quickly and sometimes they take hours or even a whole night to go away.
Tip #4: Don?t Take Anything Apart Unless You Know What You?re Doing
Disassembling plumbing is one thing that is best left to the experts, particularly if you have tried using a chemical drain cleaner without success. If a clog is very bad, it might need to be snaked. In some cases, a severe problem further down the line could be the problem, rather than a simple clog. If more than one drain is backing up, then you have a real problem on your hands.
If basic techniques for clearing a drain don?t work, then you?re going to want to call a plumber to find the clog and deal with it appropriately.
